Blankets of Fog

Plan A was to leave home yesterday for a long, sunny, day adventure and then drive home Friday in forecast rain. When we checked into the beautiful Tuckamore Cottage at Salty Seas Cottages in Ochre Pit Cove (NL) it seemed like a Plan B was in order.

Plan B involved blankets and maybe some Baileys in our coffee and a day off. No plan, out of our own house, and no obligations. A time to do nothing.

In preparation for an extra night we stopped at the Foodland in Old Perlican last night. Hating housework so much that I didn’t want to mess anything up by cooking breakfast I settled on ham and cheese croissant sandwiches. Warmed in the microwave on paper towel they were an easy start to a slow day.

Leo told me to stop taking pictures of the fog but I kept checking for blanketed icebergs. Well hidden under the sheets.

There were 5 visible yesterday. I wonder do they miss me, too?

This property is beautiful. A gorgeous playground with picnic tables behind our cottage.

Victims of the 2025 wild fires, they lost 3 multi bedroom cottages. 7 bedrooms in total meaning family bookings can only rarely be accomodated. But their one bedroom units are great for couples or singles.

By noon I’d managed the move from pj’s to jeans and we headed to Old Perlican in search of pizza.

I saw Sliceberg Pizza mentioned numerous times last year as they supplied food to fire fighters and evacuated residents in the Kingston fire zone. Only recently did they also start posting on my Newfoundland and Labrador Iceberg Reports Facebook group and a few private chats ensued. I knew their Old Perlican location was open today and prepping the Tour Sliceberg camper for a guest appearance in St. Philips tomorrow.

How great is that?

We ordered their most popular, the Carnivore and their most unique, Nan’s Macaroni. We took a drive to the fish plant for our 20 minute wait.

Early May is crab season in Newfoundland and Labrador. Many communities depend on seasonal fisheries with jobs ranging from working on boats to babysitting children of plant workers. The employment and money spins out into the community.

In aging outport communities with dwindling populations, plant workers are in shortage. If a plant shuts down, the spin off jobs go too.

We stopped in a small store and it was full of young Filipino men and women. I didn’t ask, but it’s my assumption that they may be temporary foreign workers. In New Perlican the customers in the store were young Indian men.

TFW are keeping the seafood processing industry in place on Fogo Island, in Triton and I suspect Old Perlican and Bay de Verde. Working along with local workers they are also spending money in these small communities while they are here.

In addition to the come from away we saw yesterday there were lots of local people heading in and out and around the plant with multiple wharves full of boats.

Transport truck to fork lift drivers. Lots of movement as boxes of crab come in and boxes of bait go out.

20 minutes fly on a busy wharf.

We were instructed not to let our “Pizza sweat all the way to Ochre Pit Cove ” so followed directions to the marina with more fishing and pleasure boats.

We tried the Nan’s pizza first. Homemade dough dressed with whipped garlic butter and a layer of baked macaroni and cheese. Topped with cheese and bacon bits.

So. Freaking. Good.

Great flavour and a tender bite. Pasta was cooked to perfection. I almost went for a second piece and remembered the Carvivore is their best seller.

The sauce is everything. Slightly sweet with great seasoning. Toppings and crust complimented it perfectly. These people make excellent pizza! They have a converted camper in Old Perlican and a second, larger camper that they take on Tour. Watch for them!

They serve 12 inch pizzas with multiple options. We had afternoon snacks and have pizza to bring home tomorrow.

A pizza run got me an iceberg check, too. Burnt Wood Road in Lower Island Cove was our spot again. This is the second lookout we’ve seen in this area, honoring and remembering local residents.

My new fb buddy Scott lives nearby and flies his flag proudly. It was all I could do to stop Leo from climbing down to pose with the Habs flag.

We headed back to Salty Seas as the cliffs were pulling up their blankets of fog again.

A lazy afternoon was much needed. We both kept remarking how good “this” is. Just doing nothing. Not at home reminded of things we need to do. Next week I have immunotherapy treatment at the Cancer Clinic in Gander. The next week follow up appointment with a surgeon and then a second trip to St. John’s that week but for a concert. I need fun things on my calendar, too.

A day off was well needed.

Leo had noticed a poutinerie not far away and my body was craving a vegetable. Any vegetable. So off we went.

The Mess Tent Poutinery is decorated and themed military. I wasn’t sure what I wanted but fries wasn’t it. I asked what the soup of the day was.

She had pea soup, chicken and vegetable, tomato bisque, cream of mushroom and chili! They all sounded great to me so I ordered the tomato bisque. Vegetable. Leo went for pea soup.

She was back in a few minutes apologizing. Out of tomato soup. I’d just told Leo I almost ordered the mushroom soup so that was an easy choice.

Then she came back and admitted to lying to us. No pea soup either but she brought Leo a taste of Chicken Pot Pie soup. And told him she also had baked beans. He opted for the beans but we loved the chicken pot pie sample, too.

We split an Italian sausage on a bun, too.

Condiments in a canteen box and clipped together utensils. Enamel plates and bowls. A veteran owned business with pride in their background.

The children’s menu was called New Recruits.

As I was paying I told her about my iceberg group and her eyes lit up. She’s one of us. Loves icebergs.

She’s the owner and cook and it’s all her own recipes. I didn’t think to ask if that was her military role, too. No hesitation to recommend this place. It was nice to have options that were not half a plate of fries.

I also forgot to tell her she was recommended as someone who assisted with feeding people during the fires.

This little trip was my way of paying back.

We’re settled in for the night. Heading home tomorrow. Newhook has 2 goals so far.
